The Legal Unit was established on 1st October 1996 under the Vice-Chancellor's Office.
The principal mission of the Legal Unit is to provide high quality legal advisory service to the University administration with a paramount objective of protecting and safeguarding the legal interest of the University.
The Unit endeavours to use all available legal means to fulfill its obligations by focusing on the following objectives:

Provide legal advice, opinions and guidance to the University Board of Directors, University Management, the Chief Executive Officer of the University and all other University authorities established under the University of Malaya Constitution, or to any other body as directed by the Chief Executive Officer.

|
Advise the University on matters pertaining to all legislation and policies, including the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 and the University of Malaya Constitution, Statutes, Rules and Regulations made there under, Statutory Bodies (Discipline And Surcharge) Act 2000, government circulars and all other University administrative directives governing the University, to ensure compliance with the University's policies and statutory requirements.

Draft or peruse, vet and finalise legal documents and advise on all legal issues pertaining to contractual and non-contractual obligations entered by the University.

|
Instruct and assist the University's panel of lawyers in lawsuits filed against or on behalf of the University.
|
|
|
Act as the Secretariat in disciplinary proceedings and all other proceedings brought against staff members under the Statutory Bodies (Discipline And Surcharge) Act 2000.
