National Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence for Research and Learning (NOCERAL)

Overview

Established in 2003, National Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence for Research and Learning (NOCERAL) aims to meet the current and anticipated future demands in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery. Since its inception, and with the support of its own orthopaedic foundation (Yayasan Ortopedik) and its international collaborators, NOCERAL has proven its performance in all disciplines, incorporating research, education and clinical services. Backed by highly experienced researchers, academic staff and clinicians, NOCERAL  currently offers a complete and wide range of orthopaedic sub-specialty clinical services (Upper Limb and Microsurgery, Lower Limb Reconstructive Services/Ilizarov, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement, Oncology, Foot and Ankle, Sports, Spine and Trauma) and has research groups in tissue engineering, biomechanics, bioproducts and biological aids and clinical orthopaedics.  To date, NOCERAL has research grants worth RM 4 to 5 million annually, and its research output averages more than 40 publications a year, more than 15 registered patents, and has garnered a large number of research awards (> 40).

In 2007, Dato’ Dr Mahmood Merican set up Yayasan Ortopedik to support NOCERAL’s activities. With an initial start-up fund of RM500,000 from Dato’ Mahmood, Yayasan Ortopedik also receives funding from Universiti Malaya, orthopaedic staff practising in University Malaya Specialist Centre (UMSC) and from corporate bodies. NOCERAL is grateful for the patronage of University of Malaya and the nation. It is hoped that with the continued support of its patrons, NOCERAL will be able to maintain and improve its services to serve the interest of Malaysia for many years to come.
