The first and only fiber drawing tower in South East Asian university is run by Integrated Lightwave Research Group (ILRG), University of Malaya to produce various types of fibers. They are used for multidisciplinary research such as fiber dosimetry, photonic biosensors, fully flexible glass optical chips, and ultrashort pulse laser.

The study focus on organisms of agriculture and public health importance and species with unique/specific features (e.g. parasites, generalists and specialists). It aims to provide answers to the systematic status of species complexes (occurrence of cryptic/sibling species), phylogenetic relationships, phylogeography, phylogenomics, and genetic markers for diseases. The main approach will be DNA sequencing and genome analysis.

Plasmodium, the causative agent of the endemic disease malaria has been around for centuries. Nevertheless, it remains as one of the world s most devastating infectious disease. The lack of effective vaccines, occurrence of drug resistance in Plasmodium parasites and insecticide resistance in mosquitoes have jeapordised the successful control of human malaria in many tropical regions. This is further complicated by the recent occurance of a fifth Plasmodium species, Plasmodium knowlesi(Bronner et al. 2009; Singh et al. 2004) that causes malaria in human populations.

The Making of an Online Dictionary for Malacca Portuguese Creole (Kristang)
Malacca Portuguese Creole (MPC), or Kristang, is spoken largely by people of Portuguese descent, with the largest concentration of MPC speakers in a village known as the Portuguese Settlement in Malacca. Our project aims to develop a multimedia online dictionary with pronunciation samples by building a database of MPC phonemes. Our preliminary findings indicate that Malay and MPC phonemes share similar acoustic parameters at the segmental but not suprasegmental level.

In addition, lifestyle factors including physical activity participation is now a recommended guideline in cancer survivors care plan, to optimize potential benefits in reducing cancer recurrence and mortality.

A model has been developed which can predict the nyquist plot of nanocomposite polymer electrolyte system (PEO - LiPF6 EC - CNT). The generalization ability of the neural network is the basic consideration of this paper. It was observed that bayesian neural network found successful in prediction of experimental results instead of time-consuming studies

Effects of various LiPF6 salt concentrations on PEO based solid polymer electrolytes
PEO based polymer electrolyte systems with various weight percent of LiPF6 has been synthesized using solution cast technique. The system with 20 wt%. LiPF6 exhibits a maximum conductivity of 10-5 S cm-1 at room temperature. The temperature dependence of ionic conductivity of the electrolytes obeys the VTF relationship. At the molecular level, FTIR studies provide strong evidence that there is a specific interaction between PEO and LiPF6. The change in peak intensity, shape and position confirms the complexation process of PEO-LiPF6 systems. The DSC curves indicate that the addition of various wt%. of LiPF6 on polymer electrolytes decreases the melting transition temperature (Tm) and degree of crystallinity of the system.

Approximately 45% of colon cancer and 38% of breast cancer in the USA are reported as preventable every year through better diet, physical activity and weight maintenance (AICR, 2009). Survivor rates for many common cancer are on the rise (Jemal, 2006), due to declining rate of mortality (Mettlin, 1999; Greenlee, 2000), early detection and improved therapy.

Design, fabrication and test of an efficient turbine blade for oscillating water column devices.
The objective of the project was achieved by producing two type of efficient turbine blade by using CFD simulation. These blades are called as uniform and non-uniform of the tip clearance. A new method of a blade fabrication and a light weight of blade material have been purposed. These could be reducing about 50 percent of manufacturing cost as well as reducing the production time. The project has developed a lab scale of water wave simulation to test and measure the efficiency of the turbine blade design. The purpose turbine blades were also tested with our portable wave energy power generator. This portable ocean wave energy power generator was running a field at east coast area at Pantai Bachok Kelantan and at Pantai University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)

A Marriage of Convenience: Ethnography and ConversationAnalysis in Real Estate Negotiation
The study investigates the negotiation process of second-hand property and highlights the importance of triangulating approaches as a means of complementing the drawbacks of one method, thus a marriage of convenience. The need for this marriage between Conversation Analysis (CA) with Ethnography is essential. CA basically prescribes to the notion of analysing data exclusively on what the participants see and hear (Sacks et al. 1974) but the meaning intended and interpreted by the recipient differs from the obvious linguistic meaning. In view of this need to explicate speaker meaning, ethnographic information is a necessary partner. This study looks at negotiation cases which were audio recorded and data was later transcribed based on Jefferson s (1986) transcript convention. Findings reveal that this marriage of convenience provides significant results that help establish understanding of the negotiation exchange.

Increased non-linear loads in electricity supply networks produce non-sinusoidal current distorted by harmonics (which must be compensated) and cause low line-power-factor (which must be corrected). The proposed combination of neural network and band-less digital hysteresis switching algorithm is a controller, forcing the supply current to be sinusoidal, have low current harmonics, and be in phase with the line voltage.

A Made-In-Malaysia Inverter for Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems
Environmental hazard from greenhouse gases (GHG) of fossil-fueled industries spur research into renewable-energy options and create opportunities for technology development and advancement. The Malaysia Building Integrated Photovoltaic (MBIPV) project, co-financed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Global Environment Facility (GEF), and industry, is one such opportunity, aiming to reduce direct/indirect emissions of GHG by reducing long-term cost of BIPV technology through its increased and widespread use and through environmental and industrial policies, targeting by 2010, a 330% BIPV usage increase and 20% cost decrease. Successful achievement of these aims in Malaysia can be replicated in neighboring countries, collectively reducing GHG emission significantly.

Articular cartilage defects, resulting from traumatic injury or degenerative disease, are world challenging clinical problems due to the markedly limited capacity for hyaline cartilage tissue to self-repair. Articular cartilage defects often progress to osteoarthritis of knee affecting an estimated 40% of people over the age of 70 in the developing countries and billions of dollars of loss in medical care and productivity annually.
