PROFESSOR IR. DR. ABDUL AZIZ ABDUL RAMAN

 

Professor Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Raman was appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Universiti Malaya (UM) on 13th November 2020. Previous positions held by him include Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs) UM, Dean of Faculty of Engineering UM, Director of Centre of Innovation & Commercialization (UMCIC), Director of Community & Industry Relations Centre and Director of Centre for Internship Training and Academic Enrichment (CITrA).

He graduated with a Bachelor in Chemical Engineering Degree from UM in 1989. After completing his studies, he initially worked as an engineer in oil & gas industry and subsequently in a food based industry. He then returned to academia where he joined UM as a Tutor in 1993 and rose the ranks to become a Professor in year 2012. He held several posts at the Faculty of Engineering, which includes Deputy Dean (Academic) and Deputy Dean (Postgraduate).

Professor Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz undertakes research in the field of chemical engineering focusing in the areas of mixing using stirred vessels, green technology and advanced wastewater treatment. To date, he has supervised more than 100 PhD and Master students and has published more than 300 papers in high impact journals and conference proceedings.  There are 12 patents registered under his name.  As a result of his excellent achievements in research, Prof Aziz was recognized as one of the Highly Cited Researchers in year 2020 by Clarivate and one of the Top Research Scientists in Malaysia in year 2014. 

Professor Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz is also a chartered and a professional engineer and he is actively involved in development of engineering profession in Malaysia.  Besides being a fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), he is also a fellow of The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), UK and Institution of Engineers, Malaysia.  Professor Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz has extensive experience as a practicing Chemical Engineer where he was involved in many engineering projects, especially in the field of environmental sustainability.  In the last five years, he has been contributing his expertise in Engineering Education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives programs nationally.

Prof. Aziz has devoted his professional career to achieve excellence in teaching with a student centric approach. He has three grown up children and enjoys sports activities in his leisure time.
