In March 2003, His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Muhibuddin Shah, the Chancellor of the Universiti Malaya inaugurated the Universiti Malaya Symphony Orchestra (UMSO), breathing life into an artistic first for higher learning institutions in Malaysia.
The Universiti Malaya Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) is under the baton of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Nasir Hashim with the membership consisting of a mixture of students, staff and alumni of UM. The orchestra is currently 80 members strong, inclusive of a choir. The orchestra and choir have given countless well-received concerts and recitals, be it in or out of campus.
The Universiti Malaya Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) periodically holds auditions for talented musicians and singers to join their fold. Interested University of Malaya students, staff and alumni members who are non-music majors, upon displaying proficiency in any orchestral instrument of choice are welcome to be part of this artistic experience.
