Universiti Malaya today hosted “A Celebration of Legacy, Knowledge and Partnership” at its Faculty of Medicine to honour Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai’s enduring philanthropic commitment to education, healthcare and service to society.
The programme marked several significant milestones, including the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish the Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Scholarship for Medicine and Wellness. The event also featured the presentation of the Bahasa Malaysia translation of his biography and commemorated the first anniversary of the Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Medical Museum.
Central to the celebration was the signing of an MoA between the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya and Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai, reaffirming a long-standing partnership grounded in shared values of lifelong learning and service to society.
The MoA signing was followed by a mock cheque presentation of RM1 million to the Faculty of Medicine.
“Today’s MoA reflects a partnership built on shared values, knowledge, service and lasting impact. It extends Tan Sri Dr Lim’s legacy at the Faculty of Medicine in a way that directly benefits students and strengthens the future of healthcare for our nation,” said Professor Dato’ Dr Yang Faridah Abdul Aziz, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.
The celebration also recognised Tan Sri Dr Lim’s earlier RM2 million contribution in January 2025 towards the establishment of the Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Medical Museum, which was officially launched on 25 January 2025.
The museum has since enriched medical education while preserving the Faculty’s historical and scientific heritage, serving as a bridge between traditional foundations and future-focused medical advancement.
Building on this commitment, Tan Sri Dr Lim has established a perpetual endowment scholarship fund worth RM1 million to support undergraduate and postgraduate students across research, coursework and mixed-mode programmes in medicine and wellness.
The fund will provide financial assistance to deserving and talented students, promote academic excellence and impactful research in areas critical to Malaysia’s healthcare sector, strengthen academia–industry collaboration, and contribute to the development of future leaders in health and related industries.
“I believe in doing well by doing good. True progress comes from empowering others through knowledge, and good health is the foundation that enables people to learn, work and contribute positively. By supporting deserving students in medicine and wellness, we are shaping the future of healthcare in Malaysia. My hope is that this scholarship will inspire a new generation of leaders who will give back to society, advance medical innovation, and carry forward a legacy of learning and service,” said Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai, Founder and Executive Chairman of Top Glove Corporation Bhd.
In her address, Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Universiti Malaya, emphasised the importance of alumni leadership in shaping the University’s continued growth and national contribution.
“Leadership by example matters. It encourages others to consider how they too might contribute, whether through scholarships, mentorship, research collaboration or institutional partnership.
“When alumni engagement becomes part of institutional culture, the collective impact is strengthened. Strong universities are sustained through shared responsibility,” she said.
The celebration also acknowledged Universiti Malaya’s contribution to the Bahasa Malaysia translation of Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai’s biography, Mesti Tahu, Mesti Buat, Mesti Ajar.
The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics team, led by Professor Dr Surinderpal Kaur Chanan Singh, provided professional proofreading and translation review services on a pro bono basis in appreciation of Tan Sri Dr Lim’s longstanding support and contributions as a prominent donor and partner of the University.
The event concluded with the commemoration of the first anniversary of the Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Medical Museum, underscoring Universiti Malaya’s commitment to meaningful partnerships that create long-term impact in education, research and national development
