Two Lives Remembered: A Memoir of Family, a deeply personal and reflective work by Dato’ Dr. Mahmood Merican, Malaysia’s pioneering orthopaedic surgeon, was officially launched today at Dewan Tunku Canselor, Universiti Malaya.

The book launch ceremony was officiated by His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, in a prestigious and intimate event honouring the memoir as a celebration of family, heritage, and the values that have shaped a life of purpose.
Speaking at the launch, Dato’ Dr Mahmood Merican reflected on the collaborative nature of the memoir. “The book not only tells the story of the two lives of Ragayah and myself, but also includes contributions from family members and several friends. Their writings provide unique perspectives and glimpses into their lives, each expressed in distinct literary styles that enrich the narrative,” he said.
He further highlighted the breadth of themes explored in the memoir. “In addition to biographical reflections, the book discusses my time at Pantai Hospital, the establishment of Malay Reserve Land, our travels, and, more controversially, our views on the May 1969 riots, the Malay community, and Islam.”
Reflecting on the writing process, Dato’ Dr Mahmood shared a personal motivation behind documenting his story. “Writing this book was also a mental exercise, and we hope it may help us stave off the dementia that so often afflicts people in old age,” he remarked.
The memoir concludes with two recent and meaningful family milestones: the marriage of his grandson, Amirul, to Dr. Amirah, and the celebration of Dato’ Dr Mahmood Merican’s 90th birthday, moments that poignantly affirm the continuity of family legacy across generations.
Two Lives Remembered: A Memoir of Family stands as a thoughtful reflection on identity, family, and the enduring power of education and service. More than the story of a distinguished individual, it is a tribute to Malaysia’s evolving history and the values that underpin a life lived with purpose and integrity.
The memoir chronicles the remarkable life journey of Dato’ Dr. Mahmood Merican, tracing an illustrious medical career shaped by overcoming personal challenges, dedication, and decades of service that contributed significantly to the development of Malaysia’s healthcare landscape.
Beyond professional milestones, the book offers an intimate portrait of family life, heritage, and values, presenting a narrative that mirrors the social, cultural, and intellectual evolution of Malaysia itself.
The event was also attended by academic leaders, members of the medical fraternity, family members, and invited guests.
