KUALA LUMPUR, 5 MARCH 2022: Three academic figures, including the recipient of the Merdeka Award, Professor Emeritus Dr. Ng Kwan Hoong, as well as academic figures Professor Emeritus Dr. Azirah Hashim and Professor Emeritus Dr. Liam Chong Kin, were awarded the title of Professor Emeritus at the 61st Universiti Malaya Convocation Ceremony by His Majesty Paduka Seri Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfur-Lah, Chancellor, Universiti Malaya.
Professor Emeritus Dr. Ng Kwan Hong, who was also the recipient of the Merdeka Award in 2020, is an expert in the fields of breast imaging, radiation protection, radiation dosimetry, medical physics education and risk communication.
He began his career at UM as a Science Officer in 1985, and later became a Lecturer (1990), and was appointed Professor in 2001. He has developed medical physics academic programs beyond the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland which have been accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine UK. He has also contributed actively in the education of radiologists, clinical oncologists, biomedical engineers and several other allied health professionals.
“With this award, and also with the expertise in the field of breast cancer imaging course, I will continue to provide training to experts in the country, students at the University, as well as also continue to be an aspiration for students out there to achieve excellence especially in the medical field, in line with the University's aspiration, which is to serve the country and give an impact to the world, " he said.
The second recipient, Professor Emeritus Dr. Azirah Hashim is a renowned academic in the field of Applied Linguistics and has served with distinction at Universiti Malaya since 1986 until her retirement on 11 May 2021.
As an educator and researcher -minded academic, the abilities of Professor Emeritus Dr. Azirah in showcasing academic leadership excellence through research, publication and consultancy is remarkable. Her research is in the fields of Applied Linguistics, Studies of Language Relations in Southeast Asia, Higher Education in the ASEAN region and Legal Discourse.
“I am very grateful and thankful to Tuanku Chancellor, and to Universiti Malaya for the award. With this award, I will continue to serve with excellence for Universiti Malaya, and also the country.
My area of expertise is linguistics, which is within humanities and social sciences, and I hold several positions internationally; for example, as the President, International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) (2021-2024), in fact, the first President from Asia with members from around the world, alongside obtaining the Senior Fellowship, Marie Sklodowska-Curie FCFP, (2021/2022). Through this platform, I can help strengthen the network between Malaysian researchers and researchers in Asia and internationally, ” she said.
The third recipient of the title of Professor Emeritus is Professor Emeritus Dr. Liam Chong Kin who is an expert in the field of respiratory diseases, specifically in epidemiology, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy for lung cancer as well as genetic polymorphisms of asthma.
“I still work at the Faculty and provide education to students in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program, as well as postgraduate students in the field of Internal Medicine, and provide training in respiratory medicine. I will also continue to conduct research in the field of respiratory medicine, specifically, on Lung Cancer, and will continue to contribute in this field and raise the good name of the University internationally,continuing to impact the world”, he said.
The ceremony this time saw Universiti Malaya proudly produce a total of 7,682 graduates, comprising 454 Doctoral Degree graduates, 2,318 Master's Degree graduates including Postgraduate Diploma in Education, 3,940 Bachelor's Degree graduates, and 970 Advanced Diploma, Executive Diploma and Diploma graduates.
