Empowering Malaysia’s Future Deep Tech Entrepreneurs Through Innovation and Commercialisation
Universiti Malaya once again demonstrated its leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship through the successful organisation of the UM National Deep Tech Challenge 2026, a prestigious national initiative spearheaded by the UM Centre of Innovation and Enterprise (UMCIE) in collaboration with the Student Entrepreneurship Centre (PKP), with strategic support from industry ecosystem partner Cradle Fund.
Designed to nurture the next generation of deep technology entrepreneurs, the programme aimed to transform research discoveries and intellectual properties into commercially viable ventures capable of creating meaningful societal and economic impact. Open to undergraduate students from public and private universities across Malaysia, the initiative successfully attracted 229 participants involving approximately 55 competing teams, with Universiti Malaya students representing nearly half of the overall participation.
As a high impact national platform, the challenge provided participants with access to more than 500 technologies and intellectual properties from Universiti Malaya’s official IP Library. Participants were encouraged to bridge the gap between innovation and commercialisation by assuming the role of startup leaders responsible for driving the development of selected technologies into market ready solutions.
The programme focused on several strategic innovation sectors including Advanced Materials, Green Technology, ICT and Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Clean Technology, and Medical Technology. These focus areas reflect the growing importance of deep technology solutions in strengthening Malaysia’s innovation ecosystem and future economic competitiveness.
The programme journey commenced with a national briefing session on 11 May 2026, followed by two workshops conducted on 12 and 13 May 2026 focusing on market and problem framing, commercial model development, and pitch presentation fundamentals. These sessions equipped participants with critical entrepreneurial and commercialisation knowledge essential for navigating the deep technology landscape.
One of the programme’s major highlights was the highly intensive 36 hour National Deep Tech Hackathon held from 15 until 16 May 2026 at the Exam Hall 1, Examination Building, Universiti Malaya. Conducted in a rigorous 2 Days 1 Night format, the hackathon challenged participants to collaborate under pressure while developing commercially feasible solutions based on selected intellectual properties.
Throughout the hackathon, participants worked closely with inventors, mentors, industry experts, and facilitators to refine both the technological and business dimensions of their proposed ventures. At the end of the programme, each team was required to present deliverables demonstrating technological innovation, market viability, and commercial scalability.
Selected finalist teams subsequently advanced to the National Demo Day held on 23 May 2026 at the Auditorium, Level 1, Asia Europe Institute Building, Universiti Malaya. During the session, finalists delivered professional pitches before a distinguished panel comprising industry leaders, investors, ecosystem stakeholders, and academic experts.
Participants also gained access to valuable opportunities including cash grants from a prize pool, structured mentorship, prototype funding support, industry exposure, investor networking opportunities, and potential entry into the UMDT Accelerator Programme.
The UM National Deep Tech Challenge 2026 reflects Universiti Malaya’s continuous commitment towards advancing innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology commercialisation at the national level. More importantly, the initiative reinforces the University’s aspiration to nurture future innovators and entrepreneurial leaders capable of shaping Malaysia’s deep technology landscape and driving sustainable technological advancement for the future.
