UM RENEWS PARTNERSHIP WITH SIEMENS TO DEVELOP LOCAL TALENTS

Universiti Malaya (UM) through the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering renewed its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens Healthineers Malaysia for another three years in effort to produce competent biomedical engineers.

It encompasses the faculty’s curriculum development based on the latest advancement of medical technology and solutions in the industry, enhancing knowledge transfer through on-site practical training and professional development of final year undergraduates to prepare them as career-ready biomedical engineers.

Faculty of Engineering Dean Prof Dr Kaharudin Dimyati said biomedical engineers play a significant role in healthcare and are humbly considered as silent frontliners.

“They are responsible for the selection, use and maintenance of medical equipment and life-support systems in hospitals, a crucial role in the current pandemic.

“This MoU combines the innovative engineering and services of Siemens Healthineers with the research and education expertise of UM’s Faculty of Biomedical Engineering to produce a much-needed learning opportunity that will prepare our undergraduates for the ever-evolving healthcare industry,” he said yesterday.

Previously, the collaboration which took place from 2019 to 2021 had successfully organised 14 educational sessions, awarded six internship opportunities to students with Siemens Healthineers and provided an opportunity for students to become a full-time employee before pursuing other opportunities in the industry.

Doctor of Philosophy student Pauline Yeoh acknowledged the effectiveness of the collaboration in equipping her with the knowledge and experience to be in the field of biomedical engineering.

“The programme equipped me with relevant and updated knowledge of the medical imaging industry, whereas my internship provided a clearer view of the theoretical knowledge I learnt in class.
