UM121: UM AND NUS CELEBRATE ENDURING PARTNERSHIP AT 55TH INTER-VARSITY TUNKU CHANCELLOR GOLF TOURNAMENT

As Universiti Malaya (UM) celebrates its 121st anniversary (UM121), the University marked another significant milestone by successfully concluding the 55th Inter-Varsity Tunku Chancellor Golf Tournament with the National University of Singapore (NUS), reaffirming a longstanding tradition that continues to strengthen friendship, academic collaboration and institutional ties between two of Southeast Asia's leading universities.

Held from 29 to 30 July 2026 in Singapore, the annual event brought together university leaders, alumni, staff and distinguished guests through a series of engagements that extended well beyond the golf course, reflecting the shared commitment of both institutions towards excellence in higher education, research and regional cooperation.

This year's tournament holds added significance as it forms part of UM121, a year-long celebration commemorating 121 years of Universiti Malaya's legacy of excellence, innovation and service to the nation. The event reflects the University's commitment to honouring longstanding partnerships while creating new opportunities for collaboration that will shape the future of higher education in the region.

The first day commenced with a friendly golf competition, followed by the UM-NUS Academic Symposium, by focusing on one of the most transformative forces shaping the future of the world – Artificial Intelligence (AI). The symposium served as an important platform to strengthen academic partnerships and promote knowledge exchange between the two institutions.

The evening concluded with a Gala Dinner graced by His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, and His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, whose presence underscored the significance of the enduring relationship between UM and NUS as well as the close ties shared between Malaysia and Singapore.

On the second day, participants competed at the prestigious Tanah Merah Country Club (Tampines course) , one of Singapore's premier golf courses, in the main tournament. The event concluded with a luncheon and prize presentation ceremony officiated by His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah and His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam, celebrating sporting excellence, camaraderie and the spirit of healthy competition that has defined this annual tradition for more than five decades.

Speaking on the occasion, Universiti Malaya Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the tournament represents far more than a sporting event.

"For over five decades, this annual tournament has served as a meaningful platform to strengthen the enduring friendship between Universiti Malaya and the National University of Singapore. Beyond the game itself, it creates valuable opportunities for our leaders, academics, alumni and communities to connect, exchange ideas and explore new avenues of collaboration that will benefit both institutions and the region,” he added.

The National University of Singapore also reaffirmed its commitment to continuing this long standing partnership, recognising the tournament as a unique platform that fosters mutual understanding, institutional collaboration and lasting friendships built over generations.

As Universiti Malaya celebrates UM121, the successful conclusion of the 55th Inter-Varsity Tunku Chancellor Golf Tournament serves as a fitting reflection of the University's enduring legacy and forward-looking vision. More than a sporting tradition, the event embodies the values of excellence, partnership and regional cooperation that have shaped UM for 121 years and will continue to guide the University in the years ahead.

First introduced in 1968, the Inter-Varsity Tunku Chancellor Golf Tournament remains one of the longest-running traditions between UM and NUS. Over the decades, it has evolved into a flagship annual engagement that not only celebrates sportsmanship but also reinforces cooperation in education, research, innovation, student mobility and leadership engagement.

As both universities continue to strengthen their strategic partnership, the tournament reflects their shared aspiration to advance higher education excellence while contributing to regional development and international collaboration.
