Universiti Malaya (UM) through UM Capital Berhad and the Photonic Research Center, Faculty of Science has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Pintas Utama Sdn. Bhd. for the purpose of installing optical fiber sensors in areas that have the potential for landslides.
The MoA was signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) of the Universiti Malaya, Professor Ir. Dr. Shaliza Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of Pintas Utama, Dato' Ir. Marhalim Mohamed, and Chief Executive Officer of UM Holdings Group, Mohd Zaid Abdul Jalil, where it was also witnessed by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Universiti Malaya, and the Executive Chairman of Pintas Utama.
Recently, there have been many landslide incidents across the country, including the recent landslide incident in Batang Kali that killed 31 people. This incident has raised the need to establish an effective monitoring system to detect ground movement on high-risk slopes to reduce the risk of loss of life due to landslides.
This collaboration witnessed the synergy of collaboration between Pintas Utama and Universiti Malaya in developing an effective slope monitoring system. Pintas Utama will provide all the needs and expertise in civil engineering works while Universiti Malaya will provide sensors based on optical fibers through expertise in the field of photonics. Interestingly, these sensors were developed by two Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students from the Photonics Research Center, Muhammad Syamil Mohd Sa'ad and Mohamad Ashraff Alias under the supervision of Datuk Professor Ulung Dr. Harith Ahmed.
The Universiti Malaya has also successfully produced many experts in various fields who are able to contribute to the country through this kind of collaboration. In addition, this collaboration also has the potential to foster the spirit of Higher Education Institution (IPT) students to venture into the field of entrepreneurship in order to contribute to the country's future.

Universiti Malaya (UM) menerusi UM Capital Berhad dan Pusat Penyelidikan Fotonik telah menandatangani sebuah Memorandum Perjanjian (MoA) bersama Pintas Utama Sdn. Bhd. bagi tujuan pemasangan sensor-sensor gentian optik di kawasan-kawasan yang mempunyai potensi untuk berlakunya tanah runtuh.
MoA tersebut ditandatangani oleh Naib Canselor Universiti Malaya, Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Pintas Utama, Dato’ Ir. Marhalim Mohamed, dan Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Kumpulan UM Holdings, Mohd Zaid Abdul Jalil, di mana ia juga disaksikan oleh Pengerusi Lembaga Pengarah Universiti Malaya, dan Pengerusi Eksekutif Pintas Utama. Majlis tersebut turut dihadiri oleh Timbalan Ketua Setiausaha Sektor Dasar dan Pembangunan Kementerian Kerja Raya, Dato’ Zahrul Hakim Abdullah.
Kebelakangan ini, terdapat banyak insiden tanah runtuh yang berlaku di seluruh negara, termasuklah insiden tanah runtuh di Batang Kali yang mengorbankan 31 orang baru-baru ini. Insiden ini telah membangkitkan keperluan untuk mewujudkan satu sistem pemantauan yang efektif untuk mengesan pergerakan tanah di cerun-cerun yang berisiko tinggi bagi mengurangkan risiko kehilangan nyawa disebabkan kejadian tanah runtuh.
Kerjasama ini menyaksikan sinergi kolaborasi di antara pihak Pintas Utama dan Universiti Malaya dalam membangunkan sebuah sistem pemantauan cerun yang efektif. Pintas Utama bakal menyediakan segala keperluan dan kepakaran dalam kerja-kerja kejuruteraan awam manakala Universiti Malaya bakal menyediakan sensor-sensor yang berasaskan gentian optik melalui kepakaran dalam bidang fotonik. Menariknya, sensor-sensor ini dibangunkan sendiri oleh dua orang pelajar Doktor Falsafah dari Pusat Penyelidikan Fotonik iaitu Muhammad Syamil Mohd Sa’ad dan Mohamad Ashraff Alias di bawah bimbingan Datuk Profesor Ulung Dr. Harith Ahmad.
Pihak Universiti Malaya juga telah berjaya melahirkan ramai pakar dalam pelbagai bidang yang mampu menyumbang kepada negara melalui kolaborasi seperti ini. Di samping itu, kolaborasi ini juga berpotensi memupuk semangat para penuntut institusi pengajian tinggi (IPT) untuk menceburi bidang keusahawanan agar dapat menyumbang kepada produktiviti negara pada masa akan datang.
