UNIVERSITI MALAYA RETAINS ASIA’S TOP 20 SPOT, WINS GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT CHAMPIONS AWARD

Universiti Malaya (UM) has once again cemented its position among Asia’s leading universities, securing joint 17th place in the QS Asia University Rankings 2027 while earning the prestigious Global Engagement Champions Award in recognition of its growing international influence and global partnerships.

The latest rankings place UM 3rd in Southeast Asia and 1st in Malaysia, reinforcing its position as the nation’s leading university amid intensifying competition across the region.

UM also remains among Asia’s Top 1% of universities, outperforming approximately 99% of the 1,726 institutions featured in this year’s rankings, an increase from 1,526 institutions in the previous edition.

The achievement reflects UM’s sustained competitiveness in an increasingly dynamic Asian higher education landscape, driven by its strong academic reputation, international research networks and global engagement.

Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman, described the dual recognition as a testament to the University’s growing global standing and its commitment to excellence beyond rankings.

“Asia’s higher education landscape is entering a new era of intense competition for talent, ideas, innovation and intellectual leadership. Retaining our position among Asia’s Top 20 is therefore not merely a recognition of where we stand today, but a powerful reminder of how much further we must go. The Global Engagement Champions Award carries an equally significant message: Universiti Malaya must not simply be connected to the world. We must be among the institutions that help shape its future.

“True global leadership is not defined by the number of international partnerships we establish, but by the depth of knowledge we create, the frontiers of discovery we advance, and the impact we deliver across borders. Our strength lies in our ability to bring together exceptional minds, transform international collaboration into consequential breakthroughs, and ensure that Malaysian scholarship commands recognition and influence on the global stage. This recognition belongs to our entire UM community, whose collective commitment continues to create new limits of what our university can achieve.

“Our ambition to enter the world’s Top 50 is not simply a pursuit of rankings. It is a declaration of our determination to build an institution that helps define the global future of knowledge, technology and human progress. Malaysia must not merely be a recipient of the world's greatest ideas and discoveries; we must become a nation that creates and leads them. Universiti Malaya intends to be at the forefront of that transformation, shaping future leaders, driving discoveries that matter, and establishing a lasting Malaysian intellectual legacy on the world stage,” he said.

UM demonstrated exceptional performance across several key indicators, recording perfect scores of 100 in Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Inbound Exchange Students and International Student Ratio. The University also achieved near-perfect scores of 99.9 in International Research Network, International Faculty Ratio and Outbound Exchange Students, highlighting its strong international connectivity, academic standing and attractiveness to global talent.

Adding to its regional achievement, UM was named a recipient of the Global Engagement Champions Award, announced in conjunction with the QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2026, held from 3 to 5 November in Bali, Indonesia.

The recognition underscores UM’s commitment to building meaningful international partnerships, expanding academic mobility and strengthening cross-border research collaborations that connect Malaysian expertise with the global knowledge community. The latest regional recognition follows another significant milestone for UM in the QS World University Rankings 2027, where it climbed to 56th globally, its highest position to date, further strengthening Malaysia’s presence on the international higher education stage.

As UM continues its journey towards the world’s Top 50, the University remains focused on advancing high-impact research, strengthening graduate employability, deepening strategic international partnerships and driving innovation and sustainability.

For UM, the latest achievements represent not only recognition of its standing today, but also a stronger foundation for its ambition to shape the future of higher education in Asia and beyond.
